HO Maxi-III Well Cars are HO-scale models of double-stack intermodal freight cars designed to haul containers. This detailed replica features a depressed well that allows two containers to ride per car, mirroring modern intermodal operation. It rides on prototypically correct 33″ and 38″ solid nickel-silver wheels with RP25 contours and is weighted for smooth, reliable running. The model uses body-mounted McHenry operating scale knuckle couplers on both the upper and lower shelves, and the injection-molded body is painted and printed for realistic decoration. A minimum radius of 18 inches ensures compatibility with a wide range of HO layouts.
Well cars, also known as double-stack cars, are designed to move intermodal containers across the rail network. The well between the trucks allows containers to sit lower, enabling a two-container stack per unit where clearance permits, which helps modelers recreate authentic intermodal scenes.
